Why do customers transfer between Microsoft Cloud Solution Providers (CSPs)?

By Brian Long

Ascend Perspective

Customers typically transfer CSPs when their current partner acts only as a billing mechanism, failing to provide proactive guidance, utilization support, or measurable business value post-transaction.

The license does not make the partner relationship permanent. Microsoft provides formal processes to transfer billing ownership between CSPs. If a partner only surfaces during renewal periods, they invite competitive displacement.

The Value Deficit

A company that buys Microsoft 365 or Azure but never changes how it works views the subscription as a static line item. When another partner approaches offering to optimize costs, improve security posture, or drive Copilot adoption, the customer has a compelling reason to switch.

Defending the Account

The strongest defense against a competing CSP is documented customer value. Partners must establish a value-review rhythm—recurring executive meetings to show progress, correct adoption gaps, and identify new use cases. When the partner is recognized as the engine behind operational improvements, switching becomes a high-risk business decision rather than a simple procurement exercise.
